The Byzantine and Christian Museum houses vast collection religious art and artifacts from the Byzantium in an enchanting monastery-style building and gardens. The Byzantine and Christian Museum is situated at Vassilissis Sofias avenue in Athens, Greece. It was founded in 1914, and houses more than 25,000 exhibits with rare collections of pictures, scriptures, frescoes, pottery, fabrics, manuscripts, and copies of artifacts from the 3rd century AD to the Late Middle Ages. The main building of the Museum is Villa Ilissia (1848), a neo-renaissance style mansion, constructed at the bank of the then uncovered Ilissos river. It was the residence of Sophie de Marbois-Lebrun, also known as the “Duchess of Plaisance”. The building was designed by Stamatis Kleanthis. Following the death of the duchess in 1854, the mansion was acquired by the Greek state. It houses the museum since 1930. Two new wings were built in 1952 and 1994.
The museum’s permanent collection is divided into three main sections; the first part is specialized in art dating from Antiquity to Byzantine period; the second section features Byzantine works of art and the third displays items dating from Byzantine to the Modern period. Some of the collections include, Virgin Hodegetria, Virgin of Tenderness, Crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Saint Jerusalem and sons, Secendus, Secendicus, Cegorus, Church of Fathers, Christ Pantocrator.
Το Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο, με έδρα την Αθήνα, είναι ένα από τα εθνικά μουσεία της χώρας και ένα από τα σημαντικότερα μουσεία διεθνώς για την τέχνη και τον πολιτισμό των βυζαντινών και μεταβυζαντινών χρόνων. Διαθέτει περισσότερα από 25,000 αντικείμενα, οργανωμένα σε συλλογές, τα οποία χρονολογούνται από τον 3ο έως τον 20ό αιώνα και προέρχονται κυρίως από τον ευρύτερο ελλαδικό, μικρασιατικό και βαλκανικό χώρο.
Το Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο περιλαμβάνει περισσότερα από 30.000 αντικείμενα που χρονολογούνται από τον 3ο έως και τον 21ο αιώνα μ.Χ.: εικόνες, τοιχογραφίες, ψηφιδωτά, παλαίτυπα, χειρόγραφα, αντικείμενα από χαρτί, γλυπτά, έργα μικροτεχνίας, κεραμικά, υφάσματα, πίνακες, αντίγραφα. Όλα είναι καταγεγραμμένα, ταξινομημένα χρονολογικά, κατά υλικό και θεματικά, και ψηφιοποιημένα με ηλεκτρονικά συστήματα καταγραφής. Όσα δεν εκτίθενται στη μόνιμη έκθεση φυλάσσονται σε ιδανικές συνθήκες υγρασίας και θερμοκρασίας σε σύγχρονες αρχαιολογικές αποθήκες.
Ορισμένες από τις συλλογές περιλαμβάνου την Παναγία Οδηγήτρια, την Παναγία Γλυκοφιλούσα, τους Τρεις Ιεράρχες, τον Χριστό Παντοκράτορα, την εικόνα της Αγίας Γερουσαλήμ με τα τέκνα τις Σέκενδος, Σεντέντικος και Κέγκερος, την παράσταση της Σταύρωσης, την εικόνα λιτανείας, την Αγία Αικατερίνη.
